One of the songs we love to sing at New Horizon is "I Give Myself Away," by William
McDowell. The main chorus of the song talks about giving ourselves away so that
the Lord can use us. This is more than a noble jester; it is actually a command
that Jesus gave His disciples before He was crucified. He did not just command them
(and us), but He gave us countless illustrations and the ultimate example in His
crucifixion.
He also said that they (and we) must love each other as He had loved them. When
I think about love in the human context, I think about doing something nice for
or to a person, something that will make them happy and also make me feel good.
This is not the kind of love that Jesus is talking about. Jesus' command to love
means loving people that might not love us back. Jesus' command to love means doing
for others even if they don't appreciate or even acknowledge it. That is the hardest
part!
Most of us don't have a problem loving people that we like and that like us. But
we struggle with loving people that don't like us. When we talk about giving our
lives (dying) for people that don't like us that seems like mission impossible.
Jesus wants us to love people with His love for His glory. We must allow His love
to motivate us to give our lives back to Him for His use as He sees fit.
We should not do this on our own but rather in response to His command. We love
others because we have given ourselves to the Lord so that He can use us.
He wants to use you to love someone today. Are you available? It's ok if you don't
feel like it because feelings have nothing to do with it. Are you available to love
someone with Jesus' love today?
Prayer: Dear God, I believe that you sent Jesus to die for me because you love me
that much. Help me to be faithful to your call to give myself away because I really
want to be used by you today. Amen
